Pavers, poured concrete or asphalt: choosing a driveway in northern New Jersey
The right answer depends on your ground and your winter more than on the material.

We install all three, so we have no reason to push one over another. What follows is how they actually behave, particularly through the freeze and thaw cycle that governs so much of what happens to outdoor surfaces in this part of New Jersey.
The thing all three have in common
Whichever surface you choose, its life is decided mostly by what is underneath it and by where the water goes. A well built base under a modest surface will outlast an expensive surface laid on poor ground every single time. If a quotation is noticeably cheaper than the others, the difference is usually in the base depth and the excavation, not in the material you can see.
So before comparing materials, compare what each contractor proposes to do to the ground, and how each of them intends to get water off the finished surface and away from your house.
Asphalt
Asphalt is flexible, which is genuinely useful on ground that moves a little. It tolerates minor movement without cracking in the way a rigid surface does, it goes down quickly, and it is generally the least expensive of the three to install over a given area.
Its weaknesses are edges and age. An unrestrained asphalt edge ravels away over time, particularly where wheels track over it turning in and out. It softens in real summer heat, so a heavy vehicle parked in the same spot on a hot day can leave a depression. And it needs its cracks sealed while they are small, because once water is getting into the base through them, deterioration accelerates.
Poured concrete
Concrete is rigid and hard wearing, holds its edge without a separate restraint, and does not soften in heat. Properly placed on a properly compacted base, it has a long life with very little attention.
The trade off is that rigidity. Concrete does not accommodate ground movement, it cracks in response to it, which is why the base and the control joints matter so much. It is also the least forgiving of the three where de-icing salt is concerned, especially in the first winter after placement. If you are someone who salts heavily, that is worth weighing.
Repairs are the other consideration. A damaged section of concrete is generally cut out and replaced, and the new pour will not match the old one in colour. That is a cosmetic point rather than a functional one, but people are often surprised by it.
Pavers and interlocking stone
Pavers have a real practical advantage that gets lost behind the aesthetic argument: they are made of many small units, so they tolerate small ground movements by moving slightly relative to each other rather than cracking. And when something does go wrong, or when a service has to be dug up, individual units can be lifted and reset. The repair genuinely disappears, which it does not with either of the other two.
The costs are installation and edges. A paver driveway is more labour, because the base and the bedding have to be right across the whole area and every unit is placed. It also depends absolutely on proper edge restraint. Without it, the units migrate outward over years and the joints open up. Occasional joint sand topping up is part of owning one.
How to choose, in practice
- Ground that is known to move a little, or a site with fill history: asphalt or pavers cope better than a rigid slab
- Heavy salt use through winter: pavers or asphalt over concrete, or accept some surface wear
- Services running under the driveway that may need access: pavers, because the repair is invisible
- Long straight drive, minimal budget, willingness to seal cracks: asphalt
- Appearance is the priority and the base is being done properly: pavers
Slope matters too. On a steeply sloping drive, the interaction between surface, drainage and winter grip is more important than the material choice, and it is worth talking through on site rather than from a plan.
The question to ask about any quote
Ask what depth of base is included, how it will be compacted, and where the water is going. Those three answers tell you far more about how long the driveway will last than the name of the surface material does. A contractor who is comfortable answering them in detail is telling you something useful.
