The archive

Sixty-nine years of finished work

A short pass through jobs that are still standing, and the part of each one that decided whether it would be.

Pillar

A pillar is a small wall

Every course has to sit dead level or the cap tells on you from the road. The stone is dry laid to the line, the cap is cut to overhang evenly on all four sides, and the joints are struck before the mortar sets up.

Walk

The walk is graded before it is laid

Water has to leave the house, not pool at the door. We set the fall across the walk before a single flag goes down, then lay to that pitch so the surface drains without anyone noticing it slopes.

Public

Public work keeps different hours

A park has to reopen. Municipal jobs run to a schedule the town has already published, which means the clearing, the base, the pour and the surfacing are sequenced tight and inspected as they go.

Face

Blackland frost decides the base

Northern New Jersey freezes and thaws all winter, and anything set on a thin base moves with it. Footings go below the frost line and the base is compacted in lifts, which is the part nobody sees and the only reason the face stays flat.

The grade first, then the base, then the stone that sits on top of it.

Work in this order and a patio stays flat through a decade of Bergen County winters. Work out of order and it moves the first spring.

A named job

The park work is the honest reference

The playground installations in the gallery are municipal jobs: cleared, graded, based, poured and surfaced, with benches set on concrete pads and fencing back to the line. They are the clearest picture of what this company actually is, because a town job is inspected at every stage and has to reopen on a published date.

The same crews do the residential stone. Our project managers, estimators, operators and labourers have been here over twenty years, which is the whole reason a homeowner and a borough engineer get the same standard of work out of one yard on Alexander Avenue.

They did a fantastic job on our driveway and walk! I'm so pleased with the work. They went the extra mile too. If I could give 10 stars I would.
